Water filter replacement and servicing

Every whole house filter needs new cartridges. Ours take standard-size 20-inch cartridges, so you're never locked into buying from us. Change them yourself with a set we deliver, or let our licensed plumbers change them for you. They're the same plumbers who do our whole house water filter installation.

Softeners are different: they have no cartridges. Water Corporation says calcium and magnesium cannot be removed by filtration. So a softener's resin holds on to them, and salt washes them out and recharges the resin. That makes salt the main job.

Water filter cartridge replacement

In Perth, cartridges usually need changing every 6 to 12 months, and many homes sit closer to 6. Old cartridges clog, and clogged cartridges drop your water pressure. Each change swaps all three cartridges.

  1. Stage 1: sediment cartridge, 10 micron

Catches sand, silt, dirt and rust, and protects the carbon cartridges behind it.

  2. Stage 2: activated carbon block, 10 micron

    Reduces chlorine, taste and odour.

  3. Stage 3: activated carbon block, 5 micron

Reduces chlorine by-products, volatile organics and many heavy metals.

We set a realistic schedule for your home after your water test, and we remind you when a change is due.

Water softener maintenance

Our maintenance covers regeneration checks, salt top-ups and servicing. It keeps your automatic or manual water softener running properly. There are no cartridges to change.

Automatic softener

It meters every litre you use and regenerates itself overnight, usually at 2am. It holds 50 kg of salt and uses 4.5 kg per regeneration. A household of four typically uses four to six 25 kg bags a year, about $100 to $150.

Manual softener

It needs no power. You turn a dial to run each regeneration, much like backwashing a pool filter, and we can remind you when it's due.

Servicing questions from Perth homeowners

How often do the cartridges need changing in Perth?

Every 6 to 12 months. Perth's water is harder on cartridges than most Australian cities, so many homes are closer to 6 months than 12. We'll give you a realistic schedule after your water test.

Can I use third-party replacement cartridges?

Yes. The housings take standard-size cartridges, so you're never locked into buying from us. We do offer delivery if you'd like to change them yourself, or we can change them for you.

Will a whole house filter reduce my water pressure?

Not noticeably at 5 micron with cartridges that are changed on time. Pressure only drops when cartridges are left in too long and clog, which is one reason we remind you when a change is due.

How much salt will I use, and when do I top it up?

A household of four typically uses about one 25 kg bag every three months, or four to six bags a year. The rule of thumb: if you can still see salt above the water line, you're fine. When the salt drops below the water, add a bag. Give the old salt a gentle stir first so it doesn't pack down.

What kind of salt should I use?

Softening salt with larger crystals is best because it's less likely to compact. Fine pool salt will also work if that's what you have on hand.
