A filter won't fix limescale. A softener won't fix chlorine.

This is the part most quotes skip. The two systems solve different problems, and knowing which is which saves you buying the wrong one.

What hard water is doing to your home

Hard water isn't a health risk. It's water carrying a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium, and it leaves that behind on everything it touches.

Cloudy shower screens

Minerals and soap combine into a film that no amount of scrubbing keeps away for long.

Clogged showerheads

Scale builds up around the outlets and slowly chokes your shower pressure.

Shorter appliance life

Scale forms around valves and seals in kettles, dishwashers and washing machines, leading to leaks and early failure.

Higher power bills

A layer of scale on a hot water element acts as insulation, so the heater works harder to do the same job.

Damaged tapware

Mineral build-up discolours finishes and wears out rubber washers. Badly scaled fittings often can't be restored.

Dull hair, dry skin

Hard water and soap leave a residue on hair and skin, however much shampoo or conditioner you use.

Scratchy towels

Minerals get trapped in fabric fibres. Clothes look dingy and wear out sooner.

Spotted glassware

Spots, streaks and a cloudy film on glasses straight out of the dishwasher.

Inside the 3-stage whole house filter

Water passes through three cartridges in sequence before it reaches the house. Each one does a different job.

  1. Sediment cartridge, 10 micron

Catches sand, silt, dirt and rust, and protects the carbon cartridges behind it.

  2. Carbon block, 10 micron

Solid activated carbon block. Reduces chlorine, taste and odour.

  3. Carbon block, 5 micron

A finer polish that reduces chlorine by-products such as trihalomethanes, volatile organics and many heavy metals.

Carbon block, not loose granular carbon

A solid block forces water through more carbon for longer. Granular carbon is cheaper, and water can channel straight past it. Housings take standard-size cartridges, so you're never locked into ours.

The automatic water softener

Hard water flows through a bed of softening resin that holds on to calcium and magnesium. When the resin is full, the softener rinses it with salt water, sends the minerals to the drain, and starts again.

Capacity17,000 litres between regenerations at 100 mg/L hardness. Harder water means fewer litres: at 200 mg/L, about 8,500.
Resin28 litres of high-grade softening resin
ControlMicroprocessor valve, metered, 5-stage regeneration
Flow rate35 L/min continuous, 40 L/min peak
Operating pressure175 to 600 kPa
Connections20 mm inlet and outlet, 15 mm drain
SaltHolds 50 kg, uses 4.5 kg per regeneration
Size and weight1100 h × 470 w × 340 d mm, 47 kg dry
Power240 V with a 24 V step-down transformer for outdoor safety
LocationUV rated for outdoor installation without a cover

A smaller model with 18 litres of resin, treating around 8,000 litres between regenerations, suits smaller households. We size the softener to your hardness reading and how many people live in the house.

What it costs to run

A system is only good value if you know what it costs after the install. Here's the full picture.

Every 6 to 12 months

Filter cartridges

A set of three 20-inch cartridges. Perth water is hard on them, so plan for closer to 6 months in most suburbs. Set price $399.00 (for all three). We can deliver them for you to change, or change them for you.

Learn more about filter replacement and servicing >
About $100 to $150 a year

Softener salt

Roughly one 25 kg bag every three months for a household of four. That's four to six bags a year.

Nothing else

Softener maintenance

No cartridges and no service visits. The automatic softener meters your usage and regenerates itself overnight. You add salt when the level drops.

Why we don't fit a resin cartridge and call it a softener

Some whole house systems swap one filter stage for a resin cartridge and advertise limescale removal. It holds about 5 litres of resin and can't recharge itself, so it's spent within weeks and you're buying another. A softener holds 18 to 28 litres and recharges with salt for years. When you compare quotes, ask what a full year of cartridges costs, not just the first set.

Choosing a system4 questions

Do I need a water filter, a water softener, or both?

It depends on what's bothering you. A whole house filter deals with chlorine, taste, odour and sediment. A water softener deals with hardness, which is what causes limescale on glass, taps and inside your hot water system. Most Perth homes on scheme water get the best result from both. We test your water first and tell you plainly which one you need.

Will a whole house water filter remove limescale?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding in the category. Limescale is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and a cartridge filter lets it straight through. Only a water softener removes hardness. If scale on your shower screen or tapware is the main problem, a filter alone will disappoint you.

Some companies swap a resin cartridge into the filter instead of fitting a softener. Does that work?

It works briefly. A resin cartridge holds around 5 litres of softening resin and has no way of recharging itself, so once it's full it goes in the bin. In a whole house setup that can mean a new cartridge every month or so. A proper softener holds 18 to 28 litres of resin and recharges itself with salt, over and over, for years. If limescale matters to you, the softener is the cheaper option within the first couple of years.

Can I start with the filter and add a softener later?

Yes. The two are separate units plumbed in line, so a softener can be added at any time. We'll leave room for it at install if you think you might want one down the track.

The whole house filter6 questions

What does the 3-stage whole house filter remove?

Stage one is a sediment cartridge that catches sand, silt, dirt and rust. Stages two and three are activated carbon block cartridges that reduce chlorine, taste and odour, chlorine by-products such as trihalomethanes, volatile organic compounds and many heavy metals. Chloramine-specific cartridges can be fitted where your supply calls for it.

What micron rating are the cartridges?

The standard mains-water setup is a 10 micron sediment cartridge, followed by a 10 micron and then a 5 micron carbon block (nominal ratings). Finer cartridges exist, but for a whole house we don't recommend going below 5 micron because it starts to restrict flow.

Will a whole house filter reduce my water pressure?

Not noticeably at 5 micron with cartridges that are changed on time. Pressure only drops when cartridges are left in too long and clog, which is one reason we remind you when a change is due.

Why carbon block rather than granular carbon?

A carbon block is a solid, compressed cartridge, so water is forced through far more carbon surface for longer. Loose granular carbon is cheaper, but water can channel past it. The block does a more thorough job on chlorine, taste and chemical contaminants.

How often do the cartridges need changing in Perth?

Every 6 to 12 months. Perth's water is harder on cartridges than most Australian cities, so many homes are closer to 6 months than 12. We'll give you a realistic schedule after your water test.

Can I use third-party replacement cartridges?

Yes. The housings take standard-size cartridges, so you're never locked into buying from us. We do offer delivery if you'd like to change them yourself, or we can change them for you.

The water softener6 questions

How does the automatic softener know when to regenerate?

A microprocessor valve meters every litre you use and works out your household's daily average. When there isn't enough capacity left for tomorrow, it regenerates overnight, usually at 2am, though you can set any time you like. No timers to turn and nothing to remember.

I don't have a power point near my water meter. Can I still have a softener?

Yes. Our manual softener needs no power. You turn a dial about every six weeks to run the regeneration cycle, much like backwashing a pool filter. At $3,350 installed it costs less than the automatic model and saves the cost of running power to the meter, but it does rely on you remembering to do it.

Why does a softener use salt? Does my water end up salty?

Salt is only used to clean and recharge the resin. During regeneration, brine washes the collected hardness minerals down the drain, then the resin is rinsed before the softener goes back into service. Your water won't taste salty. Softening does swap hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium, so if you're on a sodium-restricted diet, tell us and we can leave the kitchen cold tap supplying unsoftened, filtered water.

How much salt will I use, and when do I top it up?

A household of four typically uses about one 25 kg bag every three months, or four to six bags a year. The rule of thumb: if you can still see salt above the water line, you're fine. When the salt drops below the water, add a bag. Give the old salt a gentle stir first so it doesn't pack down.

What kind of salt should I use?

Softening salt with larger crystals is best because it's less likely to compact. Fine pool salt will also work if that's what you have on hand.

What maintenance does a water softener need?

Adding salt, and on the manual model turning the dial every six weeks. There are no cartridges to change.

Installation and cost5 questions

Who does the installation?

Our own licensed plumbers. The people who test your water and quote the job are the people who install it. We don't pass your details to anyone else.

Where does the system go, and can it be installed outside?

As close to your water meter as practical, so every tap, shower and appliance downstream is covered. Both the filter and the softener are UV rated for outdoor installation without a cover. The automatic softener needs a power point nearby, and every softener needs a drain connection.

Can I install it myself?

We don't recommend it. The system is plumbed into your mains line, and work on a mains supply should be done by a licensed plumber. A DIY install can also void the product warranty.

How much does a whole house water filter cost in Perth?

Our 3-stage whole house filter is $3,500 installed. An automatic water softener is $4,000 installed, and our premium package with twin filters and an automatic softener is $5,500 installed. Those prices cover a standard installation. We confirm your exact price in writing after a free site check, before you commit to anything.

What warranty do I get?

12 months on parts and labour. If something's wrong, we come back and fix it.
